My husband and I moved to Wilbraham six years ago, returning to the town where he was raised. It was a challenging time to settle into a new community, with COVID making it difficult to feel truly connected. Having lived in a city my entire life, I found myself adjusting to the nuances of town life and local governance. I got my feet wet by volunteering at the Library Book Sale, and from there, I realized I wanted to get more involved.
Attending the January Board meeting sparked the realization that serving as a Library Trustee could be a meaningful way to contribute to our new hometown. Supporting the library in its mission to serve the community would be an honor.
Professionally, I spent 23 years as an Administrator and later Head of School at a local Montessori elementary and preschool. That experience gave me direct, hands-on familiarity with managing budgets, maintaining facilities, working closely with families, and collaborating with Trustees. I believe these skills will serve me well in supporting the Wilbraham Library and its leadership.
Growing up with easy access to libraries, I’ve always appreciated the doors they open for a community. Wandering through the shelves and discovering the vast array of books available has always been a joy. Whether for research, pleasure reading, introducing children to the magic of books, or simply engaging with others in the community, the library is a space of endless possibility. I’ve found that opening a book is like embarking on a new adventure—whether it’s following Bill Bryson on his meanderings, solving mysteries with Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club, or delving into Margaret Atwood’s dystopian worlds.
Libraries are true treasure troves. We often take them for granted, forgetting just how valuable they are. I look forward to supporting the head librarian, attending to the needs of the building, and helping extend the library’s reach and impact in our community.
